    I am booking a flight to Hawaii and am Exec Plat on American. I will be flying a 3 class 787 from DFW and was not sure what class I need to book. I would like to put myself in a position to be upgraded to business class. If I book a standard economy fare, will an upgrade put me into premium economy or into business? I know systemwides will get me from ec9nomy to business, but not sure about the 500 mile complementary upgrades work on it.

    Hi, either SWUs or 500 mile complimentary upgrades will move you from main cabin into business. I have read complaints (or perhaps questions is a better term?) from people saying they got upgraded from Y to PE, not biz. What sometimes happens is that AA will upgrade people from PE to J (using SWUs or 500-mile upgrades) and then move people complimentary from Y to PE. But that is done if Y is oversold, and they aren’t (shouldn’t be) docked 500-mile upgrades.

    AA does now sell PE to Hawaii and Alaska on the 787s. (Not sure if they fly other wide-bodies to HI.) Not sure when it started.

    They also fly some 777s, depending on which airport you are flying into. I have seen them, though not totally consistently, across OGG, KOA, and HNL. I am going to Kauai and planning on flying to another and taking a jumper to prevent having to be on a a321 all the way there. Seems like the wide bodies are only coming from ORD and DFW, with PHX and LAX still using mostly a321s.
