Using Amex Pt for Hotels

Using Amex Pt for Hotels

  1. Anonymous Guest

Thanks in advance for your help. I am new to all of this and my head is spinning. I have almost a million Amex points that I want to start using. While I have learned that flights are the best bang, I need hotel rooms and I would like to use points and need advice. I have no hotel status at this point, and would like to change that. I have both an Amex gold and Platinum. I need 2 rooms for 4 nights in San Diego in May and then will need 2 rooms in Seattle (1 night) in July to start with. Amex Travel has a Hotel Collection room in SD that will cost $1948 or 278k points but, I can book the same room direct with Hyatt from for $1422 or what should be 237k Amex points if I use the points to pay my statement (if I am calulating correctly) It seems to me the $75/rm Collection bonus isn’t justified. Am I right? Is there a better way to do all of this? Is there a particular hotel chain I should get on board with since I’m about to book 10 rooms? HELP!!

Since you have Amex Platinum, you’r eligible for SPG Gold status (and by extension, Marriott Gold status) as well as Hilton Gold status.

The “pay with points” feature for Amex Travel should not cancel out any perks of the Hotel Collection, including that $75 but if you book directly with the hotel, then you’re not entitled to the $75. That is a perk reserved only for bookings via Amex. Based on your information, I’d book directly with Hyatt since you’d be saving more than that $75 credit.

Are you sure you cant use the points for flights instead?

First, THANK YOU for your help. I have flights that I would love to take and am getting ready to start looking at wonderful places to travel to, however, I’ve also got this $1500 in rooms, plus another $500 to book and I just can’t afford the cash. I am trying to figure out the best way to pull that off. Any suggestons that you have over just booking and taking the Amex credit are appreciated. The only other thing I have is about 180k Aadvantage points and my Aviator card. Is there a co-branded hotel card I should get or some other way to do this?

The Hyatt credit card offers two free nights at any property after you complete the minimum spend requirements. If multiple people in your party apply that should help knock of a chunk of expenses for your stay. You could also look at three people getting the Barclays Arrival + and splitting the charge to use the $500 bonus per card. Using MR for statement credits is a very poor redemption rate. If you can’t help it, c’est la vie but I’d try to look for other alternatives if possible.
