Greetings!

I just cashed in 235,000 MileagePlus miles and was able to construct a 7 segment, around the world in 8 days trips either in F or C on UA,OZ,TG,LH. All the pieces fell into place and not having to deal with reservations was a blessing. Total cost: $174

I would like to add this trip is being accomplished using both a Chase MP Explorer card with 40k bonus points and a Sapphire Prefererred with 50K, both through advice here and links.

I’m a former airline and corporate travel guy and a bit rusty. I’ve read your reviews on hotels in Bangkok and know your preference for the Intercontinental. However I have no hotel status and currently $845 Chase travel dollars!!! All without paying a penny in interest and putting everything on my card.

I was looking at the Peninsula but not getting very good cooperation with the hotel. The main page for the group shows a suite package including transfers/bfast/credit/upgrade and late check out which is important as I have a midnight flight to Rome (specifically excepting LA and NYC properties) however the hotel is not recognizing it and wants to charge almost $100 each way for a transfer, getting a bit rich for me. Internet access important and the Peninsula includes it in all rates (wi-if)

What are your best suggestions for a luxury property that’s not totally over the top $$ wise and I’m looking for mid February avoiding Chinese NY. I want a nice area for exploring on my own.

This trip is almost more about the flight experience (F on a 747 and A380, C on A350 and A330) and I want to go all out for 2 full days/nights in BKK. All suggestions appreciated. I saw your recent reviews on the Le Meridien and Sheraton and will pass on them.

Thanks so much!

Bobby

Bobby, if the only thing holding you back from the Peninsula is the transfer cost, just use an Uber to and from the airport. We were just there and it worked seamlessly.

I’m curious: what reason does the hotel give for not recognizing the advertised package?

3. Bobby D

They just ignore the transfers from the Peninsula Group homepage. They list all of the benefits less the transfers.

It’s like it’s not even there. They only mention the “complimentary” river ferry

Take a screen shot and send it to the GM and ask why they won’t honor the advertised package? Follow up with the corporate office if that doesn’t work? Seems like a very strange situation.

Thanks for the quick replays.

I asked what the Buffet breakfast runs too and got the impression “if you have to ask….” I lucked out years ago and stayed in many many luxury/high end properties and I really want to make this special but there’s a limit.

Peninsula side, other recommendations?

Also I’ll be in Rome 2 nights and saw they are opening a new Le Meridien 1 Feb. rates around €150 to start. Seems convenient and perhaps try and keep SPG.

My favorite go-to website for hotels is www.tablethotels.com They have very nice customer service and Ive never experienced a problem booking through them. (BTW- the Peninsula is by far my favorite BKK hotel.)

Thanks Rob

I screen grabbed from the BKK page on Peninsula with all the benefits and have sent another email including it.

When I click through it says room not available, but then in the options all the suite categories are available. When you click on the link under amenities for winter special, it only says all benefits of the special but lists only the standard amenities. No mention of bfast, transfers, $50 credit etc

Rob, if I dont go with the suite do you recommend the balcony room?

Hi. Im not the best/ most avid “deal-guy”, so probably not the best person to give advice on how to get the most ($) out of Peninsula. Whenever we stay there, I simply find the value and the service to be HUGE. Our favorite rooms are the -02 room with nice bay window overlooking the pool below and the -11 room which faces the other side of the side looking up/down the river. The balcony rooms are somewhat odd as they are the two rooms in the center of the tower and if feels like there is less privacy. Each time we stay, we get the Hotel Car PickUp as its such a long flight and to be shuttled with BMW in car wi-fi and lemon grass towels / fresh water….. is rich. We take a local taxi from hotel to BKK when departing. We always seem to have breakfast free in their river restaurant. Of course the water taxi is free! Its free for anyone and everyone living in the City, etc. Wifi in hotel is free and fast. Ice always in the ice buckets…. Ive been there maybe 12 times and have NEVER heard any noises from neighboring rooms. AC is totally quiet / perfect. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I’ll stay away from the balcony room. I can get a Deluxe Suite for only $202 directly from Peninsula site. non refundable but thats ok. Includes upgrade plus late check out. I’ll take advice and treat myself to the ride to the property and taxi back. The Suite package they’re offering is $279 including just bfast for two but I’ll be myself. Many other reviews folks mentioned they thought they had to buy bfast but seemed to be included so I’ll be prepared for both.

Again thank you! I was really drawn to being on the other side of the river and this property.

I am very sure that all rooms are suites. The two corner suites are very (too) large and can be combined with the neighboring “suites”. I only see logic in that if you are a party of 4 adults or more…. But, the typical rooms are huge for two people…. two sinks, a tub with tv and stereo, separate shower and WC rooms…. the closets are walk-in with drawers and seating areas….. its a perfect design.
And, yes, at the Peninsula, you have a full frontal view of the city as its all in front of you…. 5 mins across the river and you are with the rest of city…..

Booked directly on Peninsula site, grand deluxe room. Took your advice suite a waste. Very frustrated with their reservations. I sent a screen grab for the original package and again reiterated I was by myself and a special “round the world in 8 days” trip. What do they send me?

The “romantic” package for two, bfast, 1 dinner and a bottle of champagne! I replied and asked for a manager to respond. Meanwhile I said F it and just booked it. I should have booked it last Saturday when I could have booked via the Chase rewards site but alas the property no longer shows up; just booked and will take the hit on the 25% bonus and have Chase just credit my account.

I also took your advice to enjoy the car service on arrival, even though I’m only traveling from Hong Kong. I’ll have a 7pm check out for a midnight flight so taxi will be fine.
