What to do with expiring SkyPass Miles

What to do with expiring SkyPass Miles

  1. Rohit Deshpande Member

So I have not had any real activity on my Korean Air SkyPass miles for close to 10 years now. I have roughly 23K miles on it, which will expire in January of 2018. That’s not enough miles for international travel (I’m based in Los Angeles), but that’s still a substantial amount and I would rather not have that go waste. So I’ve been using KE’s search tool to look up award flights to certain cities that I fly to frequently in the US and each time it says something like “flights unavailable” etc and even the schedule of dates won’t load. So I tried looking for an award flight from LAX to ICN just to see if it had the same issue and nope! 52,500 miles one way and there’s plenty of award availability. So my question is, can I use these miles for some Alaska/ Delta flight within the US? If so, why is Korean’s search tool not showing ANYTHING for domestic awards? I tried looking up award prices from LAX to SFO, JFK, SEA, etc. I still have had no luck. Any suggestions you guys have? I cannot book anything out further than a year from today and this summer is already filled with flights. So I want to use the miles and book something in December for 2018 flights. But I just want to get a general idea of costs right now to plan accordingly, but I can’t even get a rough idea because the search tool is not giving me any results. Anything I’m doing wrong? Or any suggestions? Thanks, guys.

Rohit, have you seen Lucky’s post on using SkyPass? It’s a bit old but the gist of how to search/redeem is pretty much the same. Maybe start there?

Hi Ricky thanks for the reply. This post gives the best uses of SkyPass miles and where the redemption values are the greatest and the charts but I’m having difficulties even being able to search for award flights in the US on a skyteam partner. There’s no results showing at all. So either there’s no availability on SkyTeam partner/Alaska, I’m doing something wrong, or the website is broken and the 3rd I highly doubt but who knows. Thanks again.

Can you find lowest saver award availability on the Alaska or Delta website? If so I’d think you could call Korean to see if they can see those flights.

Also keep in mind that partner awards thru SkyPass have to be round-trip. So that might also be why no results show up? You can only book one way awards on Korean Air metal.

Ahh I forgot that works, I’ll try that. I found delta 25K one way first class from LAX to SEA and I have 23K so I might transfer some ultimate rewards points over to use it. But unfortunately since I have to do round trip for KE partner awards, i might not have enough to do so 🙁 thanks for the help skier

Yeah that was the issue the first time around so I changed that the second time and still no results. Also I changed the search to partner airlines and tried a whole bunch of dates and no results error popped up. I feel like the award search tool on KE isn’t working because at this point I feel I’m entering all the fields and everything the way it should be.
