What has happened to Qatar business class awards

What has happened to Qatar business class awards

  1. Anonymous Guest

I have noticed that business class awards on Qatar using AA miles have basically disappeared. I have called AA multiple times and no one seems to be able to help me out. I can find flights listed on AA site but they can’t be booked and AA agents can’t book them either. What gives? If Qatar is a part of ONEWORLD alliance then why don’t they make some awards available so I can use the hundreds of thousands of miles I have accrued with AA. Very disappointing.

William, award space often ebbs and flows. I would check the award space using BA or Qantas to make sure it is not an error before calling AA.

There have been sporadic reports of this for months.

Probably a combination of two issues – AA’s well-known phantom award space issue, and QRs generally stinginess with award seats. Anecdotally the best way to find QR award space is to set Google alerts for blogs such as this one (and subscription services like FCF). QR releases seats in bunches but not always on the routes you desire, or certain days.

Also check with Spencer Howard at straighttothepoints.co (not .com). Get on his mailing list and he’ll send out notices when a sudden burst of award space becomes available. Let him know what you’re looking for and he can sometimes keep an eye out for it.

A quick add to what the others have said. You mentioned calling AA. Which office did you call? Depending on your route, the *Australian* AA office may actually be able to see and book space where the US office may not. For reasons…?
