Use miles or not? OW Return from Australia-SFO

Use miles or not? OW Return from Australia-SFO

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hi there,
I fly to NZ tomorrow on a one-way SFO-LAX-AKL ticket. I plan to end my trip in Ayers Rock and take a tour that will land me in Alice Springs. I found an AA ticket from ASP-ADL (night layover, which is ok as I will have not visited ADL)- SYD-SFO for about $1,100. I can book the same ticket with a Saver Award for 40,000 miles. I have 180,000 AA miles and was saving them for an around-the-world ticket… but its not likely I would go in the next year. Should I use 40K miles and by the ticket with miles?
    thanks!

Mary, what are the taxes on the paid routing?

    HI Gaurav,
The taxes on the paid routing are $133. (The taxes on the 40K award ticket – my out-of-pocket expense for the award – are $140.)
I have the flight on hold for another 8 hours so advice is appreciated!
    Thank you,
    MC

Mary, once you deduct the taxes you are getting about 2.4 cpm which is not bad and clears most people’s valuation of AA miles. However it’s not great either and you won’t earn miles for the flight. Personally I’d tend to use cash in this instance and save miles for a higher value premium cabin flight.
