Upgrades on AA/BA
Hi all,
My inlaws, wife and I are booked on a trip in December to LAS from the UK. I am lifetime Gold (currently platinum) with AA. The trip is a celebration of my inlaws 50th wedding anniversary. Anyway, costs (and point balances) being what they are, we have the trip booked in PE. On the way over, we fly LBA-LHR-PHX-LAS. As far as PHX, the trip is a BA codeshare (787). The return is LAS-DFW-LHR-LBA. This is all AA except the LHR-LBA portion.
EDIT: I should say – flights booked through AA, and we have all AA flight numbers.
I called AA and asked about upgrades. I was told they are available, but BA says the fare is ineligible as we are booked in P and they require W. The return is also available, a 25K miles and $350 copay each (100k miles and $1400 total).
Two questions: 1) Is the AA rep correct about the flights over?
2) Would you do the upgrade on the return? I am considering trying to surprise everyone with at least the return, but wondered what your thoughts would be. I know my inlaws would never fly business otherwise, and 50 years is a long time.

Both may be correct. Upgrades may be available, but I do believe BA allows upgrades only from W. But since your ticket is on AA, ask AA to process the upgrades. See what happens.

I would definitely upgrade on the return. I assume it is a redeye? Even though shorter time-wise, I’d much rather upgrade the DFW-LHR flight than the LHR-PHX flight.

I did…and was told BA only allows upgrades from W. Which also matches the research I have done. Thought I’d ask here just in case there was something I was forgetting and/or missing.

Not a redeye. 1555 out of DFW. I am leaning towards upgrading (while its available) – I was just curious as to what others would do.
Thanks so much.

Got it. I misunderstood. Thought you contacted BA and they said they wouldn’t upgrade.
And sorry – I guess I meant overnight flight. Which it is. I would definitely upgrade.

No problem at all. I probably could have been a little clearer. Trying not to make everyone’s eyes bleed with a wall of text. 🙂
