UA MileagePlus Card: Card Benefits in 2017

UA MileagePlus Card: Card Benefits in 2017

So, I signed up for the MileagePlus card back in June in order to get the 70K mile bonus, and am planning to cancel it before the next annual fee hits. However, I was wondering a couple of things on this:

    1. When will the Club passes for 2017 get mailed out? I’m hoping to get these before I cancel the card.
    2. If I purchase United tickets with this card and cancel the card before my flights (but after paying for them of course!), then would I still get the free checked bag + priority boarding perks? I was miffed earlier this year when I discovered that having the card for a flight, but not purchasing the flight with the card doesn’t get you the free checked bag.

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the club passes but I *think* that from the time you cancel the card you no longer get the free checked bag or priority boarding. But someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Also keep in mind that owning the card allows you access to award space not available to those who don’t have the card. Just something to consider before you cancel.

@wilve–you could consider downgrading the card to base UA card (no fee, earns 0.5 United miles/$). I’m not sure what the baggage benefit is on that card but you still get access to the expanded award availability that @MidSouth Skier mentions. Plus the usual benefits of maintaining credit history etc.

My recollection is that the club passes are mailed out at the card anniversary. You should be able to wait to get these because you can get the AF waived upto 30 days after it posts if you cancel or product change.
