Transferring Avios points to other programs
Lucky
I asked this question over a week ago with no response hopefully this time it’ll get answered since that’s why I get your blog in the first place…
How difficult is it to transfer Avios points to lets say Cathay pacific.. I also saw on their site that Cathay charges a $50fee to join their ff program.. Whats up with that I feel that’s exorbitant and ridiculous. It will be a cold day in hell when I pay to be in someones FF program..
Thanks for your “prompt ” response
Steve
Hi Steve! Sorry we missed this earlier, but you can’t transfer points between airlines. You can use your Avios for flights on Cathay, but they don’t transfer otherwise.
Is there an echo in here again?

Are you also flightdataguy? If so Tiffany has already replayed to your question. Tiffany is Lucky right hand woman and seems to be the person in charge of this forum.
And NO you can in general not transfer points from 1 frequent flyer program to another frequent flyer program even if they are in the same alliance, however you can use them for award redemption and if your booking class is the right one for upgrade to a higher class on select airlines.
And unless the rule have change Cathay is NOT one of the airlines that you can use Avios to upgrade on. Might want to check with @Tiffany to be sure.

You can however use Avios for a outright award ticket if you don’t have any other use for them. Avios is most useful for expensive short haul flight, not long haul due to the distance based award chart.
And Steve Y if you want “prompt ” response you might want to consider using a paid service rather than a forum. Or try your luck over on Flyertalk, there are more members there if a quick replay is that important for you.
