The Absurd LH P Class

The Absurd LH P Class

1. esom New Member

Hi Everybody,
I am a Turkish Airlines Star Alliance Gold Member. Regarding mileage accrual, I have been having some fight (not literally!) with Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa without any success until now. I will appreciate any opinion and advice.
The (really absurd) problem:
According to Turkish Airlines rules any flight in P with Lufthansa is NOT entitled for mileage accrual.
After many complaints to both airlines , where none of them gave a clear answer, but just some general comments. I have come to the following conclusion:
LH is instructing to TK NOT to issue any miles. (Confirmed by both airlines on the phone)
P class is the cheapest business class for LH flights. It is neither referring to a free upgrade nor to a ticket purchased with miles.
So if I buy LH premium economy tickets (N or E class) I can earn miles. If I pay for an upgrade to business class, where sometimes I end up with Z and sometimes with P without any warning, in the case of P class I get no miles to my account.
What is the logic? Fly with Economy or Premium Economy paid tickets, you can get miles. You pay more for business calls, you don’t get miles.
By the way LH P class is offered for direct purchase, as well; of course again with the absurd condition of paying more and getting no miles.
You can see the attachments for proof .I really appreciate any opinion and suggestions. Honestly if any airline tells me some even stupid reason, I will accept it. Until now that’s not the case.

Welcome @esom – and unfortunately, you’re correct. LH P-class will not earn points on Turkish. Take a look at Where To Credit to see where else you may want to credit those flights:

Thanks a lot MidSouth Skier!
I wasn’t aware of wheretocredit.com I will keep it for future reference. Obviously there are other Star Alliance cards treated the same way. Of course this still doesn’t answer my curiosity why LH has taken this decision? Definitely not a good strategy for marketing. Spend less, get more miles! 🙂
Probably it will force the passenger to choose other airlines instead of LH for the same route. I wish one day somebody at LH would give an understandable explanation. Many LH representatives who called me back on this issue were surprised, as well and had no explanation. This is the rule and we have to live with it.

Stupid, but it’s what the airlines agreed to so there’s not much you can do. As to why, probably wont know unless you reach upper management or know someone inside the airline.

Also, if you had paid to upgrade, you’d still earn miles based on your original ticketed class, not the upgraded class.

Hi David,
Unfortunately to pursue the punishment Lufthansa reports the class of flight after upgrade and not the original ticket class to other Star Alliance Member. I have lost quite some miles this year because of the policy.

I still don’t understand why and have no close connection to anybody at LH. 🙁

Although I’m not sure about it 100%, I think a paid business class upgrade
from Premium Economy Basic ends up with P Class Business, from Premium Economy Basic Plus or Flex ends up with Z Class Business. There is no way to see the upgrade class before paying it.
Cheers

Paid upgrades almost never go into a paid fare class. There are specific fare classes for awards and upgrades. For most (if not all) Star Alliance carriers, fare class X is for economy awards, I is for business class awards and O for first class awards, Lufthansa (and some other Star Alliance carriers) also use I and O for business and first upgrades as well.

Also, if you had upgraded your ticket and didnt earn miles, you can always show a boarding pass and your original ticket confirmation to the program of choice to request miles and elite credits based on your original purchased ticket. I’ve personally done this before and have had no issue. Most airlines allow you to request miles and credits for flights flown in the last 3-6 months.
