Thailand trip using aeroplan reward travel

Thailand trip using aeroplan reward travel

  1. Cathy New Member

    Hi everyone,

I am planning a trip travelling from LAX (or ONT) to Vietnam (HAN, Hanoi) with an open jaw in SGN (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) and a stopover in Bangkok,Thailand in June 2019. I have been reading a lot on your website and the blog. To the best of my knowledge, I have made a plan for the trip as follow:

-I will choose United airlines for the trip as United MileagePlus Reward ticket allows 2 open jaws and 1 stop over. Since United needs 140,000 miles for business class while Alaska Air and Cathay Pacific need only 100,00 miles respectively. I would prefer to go with them instead. Do you know if Alaska Air or Cathay Pacific allows open jaws and stop over for business round trip ticket?

-I have about 100k Aeroplan miles. Can I transfer it to Alaska Airlines Mileage or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles to book the ticket?

My departure airport could be either ONT ( (Ontario International Airport, Ontario, California; my first choice) or LAX

I am a newbie to this. Any suggestion or advise to my planning is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you. Cathy

May I ask, do you already have the 140K Mileageplus points? And what about Alaska miles?

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer your aeroplan miles to Alaska to Cathay. I dont believe Alaska air offers open jaws when booking a Cathay reward. However you are allowed a free stopver in Hong Kong and you can book two one ways which would make an “open jaw”

One potential option using Alaska miles, if you are flexible in the sequence of your destinations, is to book a Cathay award from LAX-HKG-SGN. Cathay Pacific does not fly directly to Hanoi though its subsidiary Cathay Dragon does. I dont think you can book Cathay Dragon using Alaska miles.

You could then book a ticket home BKK-HKG-LAX. You would need to find a way from HAN to BKK but revenue tickets between the two cities seem inexpensive.
