If you call Amex and ask to talk to the insurance team re: coverage on a rental they will be able to give you a quick answer. I’ve called before for similar questions on both my Amex Gold and Amex Hilton Aspire. They get you the answer quickly.

I dont believe they’re insured since they’re not the cardholder, but please call Amex to confirm.

However, Amex offers secondary coverage, meaning that they only get involved once the driver’s primary insurance runs out. https://onemileatatime.com/credit-card-rental-car-insurance/

I feel like we went down this road a few months ago on a similar question. I didn’t say that everyone or anyone in particular would be covered; however, I did have a similar issue, and I did call Amex. IF the state in which the rental occurs is one of the states where a spouse is automatically an additional driver on the contract without having to pay a fee, provide an ID, etc., then that driver is *also* covered. For instance, if my spouse were to rent a car with *my* AMEX card, then in my state I would automatically be an additional driver. Additionally the secondary insurance offered by AMEX would cover both of us.

@OCTinPHL True, though since the OP didnt specify, I assumed that it’s not a spouse theyre talking about. 🙂
