Qualifying for AA EP flying on JAL

Qualifying for AA EP flying on JAL

I’ve enjoyed my AA EP status the last year and am wondering about requalifying by flying partner airlines this year. In particular, I’m seeing X class business fares to Malaysia on JAL from JFK for $2500 in August and beyond. Looking at the AA partner information, I’ve calculated the RT flight would earn 20K redeemable miles, 40K EQMs, and $5K EQDs. Am I missing something or is my math right? I realize we’re not allowed into Malaysia at the moment.

Are you booking the flight directly from JAL, or on the AA website as a codeshare? That will affect your earnings…

The $2500 fare is on both the JAL and AA websites. Same actual flight (on JAL).

The big difference would be in your EQD earnings – booking through JAL would earn you more (that 25% of distance flown, 5k, as you said). Whereas booking through AA would earn EQD based on the cost of the ticket ($2,500 minus any taxes).

So, booking through JAL would probably make more sense if your goal is a status shortcut.

Only watch-out would be whatever JAL cancellation policy is due to covid. I’m not sure what theirs is like… but know that AA is pretty generous
