Long layover in LAX connecting to SYD
Logistical question for those with more travel experience than I. Husband and I are looking at flying to SYD from BOS, and would have a 10.5 hour layover in LAX. A few questions:
1) Would we be able to re-check our bags right after our Boston flight, so we don’t have to cart our bags around?
2) If so, would we be able to leave the airport and go sightsee?
3) If none of them above, and we’d need to keep our bags with us until the bag check window starts for our LAX – SYD leg, is the best/cheapest solution to just rent a car?
You can definitely leave the airport and go sightsee, plenty of time. If the airline won’t check your bags all the way through, I’d consider a luggage locker. I’ve never used one at LAX, but I did in Miami a few months ago. It was like 10 dollars to leave my bag for 6 hours and I went and sat on the beach for a while!
If you’re on a single ticket the airline should check your bag the whole way and you won’t even have to worry about checking it though you may want to do like Ricky suggests and get a locker for a carry-on, especially if you have a rollaboard bag.
LAX is on the west side of the city, close to the beaches if that’s your thing. Otherwise, there is a metro light rail system that will take you to downtown. Make sure you budget plenty of time back if you’re taking a Uber/Lyft; the traffic around LAX can be horrendous
