Limit on purchase of AA miles?
Hi there
Im a newbie to the forum & AA Advantage program so apologies in advance if this has been asked before, but i couldnt find anything to date in my searches…
Im looking to purchase AA miles under the current promo ´Now through April 28, you’ll earn up to 115,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles when you buy miles for yourself, or add up to 115,000 bonus miles to your purchase when you gift miles to a friend or loved one. That’s a total of up to 265,000 miles.´
Quite simply i just want to know if i buy 150,000 miles do i get 265,000 miles credited into my account? My confusion comes from the fine print, which variously states:
´The applicable bonus miles are awarded to the recipient for Gift Miles transactions.´
What are Gift Mile Transactions? Does this mean I have to gift them, or can I keep them?

´Bonus miles earned do not count toward the annual limits.´ that sounds great as i need 250,000 but then the next paragraph states:
´Each AAdvantage member is limited to purchasing or receiving in a calendar year, a combined total of no more than 150,000 AAdvantage miles. Miles purchased through the Buy Miles program or received as a gift through the Gift Miles program count against this total.´ Confused? I am and sure would appreciate any clarification . if the limit on purchased miles & gift miles is 150,000 how does the bonus work?
many thanks in advance
virtualbenz, welcome. You can buy the miles for yourself and you will get the bonus miles without having to gift them. The bonus miles do not count towards your purchase limits so in effect you are maxing out your annual purchase limit and you will get the bonus miles in addition to those miles. This shouldn’t be a big deal though if you need more miles. You could always set up miles accounts for other family members and buy miles through those and have them book tickets for you.
I’m kind of annoyed at the limit – I dont feel it has a purpose. Buying miles isnt cheap and it’s not like it goes toward elite qualification. I’d have loved to buy miles before the devaluation to lock in another award or two.
