Limit of “30” days for AA Buy Miles + gift to new account

Limit of “30” days for AA Buy Miles + gift to new account

1. Anonymous Guest

Hi everyone,

I have a relative who recently opened an American Airlines account.
Exact date is 31 January 2016.

As you know there is currently a promotion for buying AA miles until 1st March.
I was wondering if he would be able to buy miles on the 29 Feb ? or 1st March ? Or not at all ?

Also, the award that he is looking for may not be available anymore by the time he can buy the miles.
What if I buy the miles with my account and “gift” them directly to his account ?
Any problem for gifting miles to an account which is less than 30 days old ?
If I do so, does it count towards my limit of 150 000 miles that I can buy every year ? I would actually also like to buy miles for myself.

Thank you.

Hi hk tourist, as far as I know there is no way to gift miles like you are describing. You can buy miles and you can then transfer them to another account but you’ll end up paying for them twice, once to buy and once to transfer which would destroy most of the value of the miles. They will also count towards your annual purchase limits.

What you could do if you trust your friend is to buy the miles and book the tickets for them. Then they can buy miles during the next sale when their account is fully active and buy a ticket for you. You’ll have to make allowances for different prices during different sales.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer.
Actually, I wasn’t talking about “share miles” (where there are some fees) but more about “gift miles” directly when buying them, as described on this page :
https://buymiles.aa.com/en/buygift/info
And check the box “Is this a gift ?”

According to the FAQ ”
What are the Buy Miles and Gift Miles programs and how do they work?
The Buy Miles and Gift Miles programs allow AAdvantage members to purchase miles for themselves or other AAdvantage members. You must be a current AAdvantage member in order to buy miles for your own AAdvantage account. You do not have to be a member to gift miles to an AAdvantage member.

What do you think ?

Also, what about the exact date when the new account will be able to buy miles ? (if created on 31st Jan)

Thanks a lot !

Just realised I already missed the 10% discount that was valid until 8 Feb… No luck :/ I should have bought miles with my account already…
