LHR to LGW late night transport

LHR to LGW late night transport

  1. AT in Atlanta

Hello. I will be arriving into LHR at 22:40 via AA 0090 on a Thursday night in mid-November. I fly out of LGW the next afternoon at 14:30 via BA South Terminal. So I booked a room at the Hilton LGW that’s connected to South Terminal for easy access the next day. However, I wanted to know what’s the best way to get from LHR to LGW upon arrival? I know National Express operates buses, but they have much less frequent service at that hour (instead of every 30 mins, it looks like every hour) and the journey seems to take 1 hour 40 mins according to their website for a 1:00am departure! I don’t understand that?

Also, how much time should I allow after landing (I’m flying AA Business Class from ORD to LHR) at Heathrow to go through Immigration and Customs, assuming on-time arrivals? If I pre-book a National Express bus, what time bus should I choose to take me to LGW?

Is it better to go private car hire or Uber instead for quicker transit time? I presume they’re pretty pricey though? I haven’t been to London in ages, so not familiar with private car hire services.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Assuming there aren’t tons of other flights arriving at that hour, it shouldn’t take too long to go through Customs & Immigration. If you prebook you’ll enter your flight info so they’ll wait for you but I’d think about 23:15 should be fine.

But I’d definitely go for a private transfer/Uber/taxi vs. a bus at that hour. The last thing you want is for that ride to get dragged out.

https://www.airportshuttles.com/london.php compares a lot of different types of private transfer.

Thank you, Mid South Skier. If I land at 22:40, you’re saying 23:15 would be doable?

I think I will choose private transfer as well…agree with you about that. Thanks for that link, I’ll take a look. Have you used a private transfer service that you liked and was reasonably priced?

  4. MidSouthSkier

Eh, you may want to make it 23:30-45 just to be safe. But like I said, if you pre-book and get a meet & greet they’ll have your phone and will wait for you. My guy called while I was waiting to clear Customs, just to be sure I was on my way.

Others may have better knowledge as to how many planes are arriving at that time.

You didn’t mention if you are checking bags but if so, make sure you factor that in. The late arrival is no guarantee that bags will clear quickly.

Gia, thanks for your reply. My goal is to not check in a bag; however, I’m traveling with collapsible light trekking poles and I hope that they clear through TSA without issue. My friend has traveled domestically with those poles in carry-on and has not had an issue before, so I was hoping since I begin my journey in ATL that I can clear through TSA at ATL with the poles in carry-on.

Does anyone have experience traveling with trekking poles in carry-on for international travel? The ones I have are Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z.

  7. Donna

According to the TSA website they are not allowed in carry on bags. See sporting goods section of “What Can I Bring.”

Maybe it’s just me, but I think I might stay near Heathrow, and do the transfer to Gatwick in the morning…

I thought about mentioning that as well but as I thought more about it I think I’d do the transfer at night. Much less traffic and even if there are street closures somewhere, you’re not worrying about rerouting in time to make a flight.

I did think about staying the night at LHR, but for the same reason MidSouth Skier points out, I want to be at my destination to avoid any surprises getting to LGW in the morning.

I’ll be returning from Italy via Easyjet on a Saturday arriving into LGW at 13:00 hrs. I fly out of LHR at 19:10 hrs via BA First to BOS that same evening. Even with checked luggage on Easyjet, immigration etc. at LGW and then transit time to LHR via National Express bus, I should be ok to make a 19:10 departure, right?

Private taxi will be the better option, I would recommend hiring waterloocars.co.uk personally I like their service and use them for London airport transfers. Beside that shuttle service would be great, because it more economical than private hire.
