IHG 20% discount when purchasing points

IHG 20% discount when purchasing points

  1. Anonymous

    Hi Lucky,

I bought 99K IHG points recently with my new Premier World Elite card and got the 80% bonus which was awesome, but I didn’t get a 20% discount on the purchase. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall one of your blogs suggesting the 20% discount would apply to purchasing points.

Here’s the response I got from IHG after asking them to research my purchase.

    Greetings from IHG Rewards Club!

This is regarding the IHG Premier credit card benefit of 20% discount on point purchase. We were advised that you would like to apply this benefit on your recent purchase.

Please be advised that 20% discount for point purchase cannot be combined with any other offers. If there is a promotion in the market that is a better offer than 20% the member will receive the better offer. We show that your purchase on 26 May 2018 received the 80% bonus offer which is the better offer than the 20% discount.

We hope this clarifies your inquiry….

Thank you for taking the time to contact us as we value your patronage. Should you require further assistance, please feel free to contact the IHG Rewards Club Service Center again.

Hi Bruce – In a blog post earlier this month, Lucky confirmed that the 20% off is not stackable with other promotions for purchased points.

    https://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2018/05/01/more-on-the-benefits-of-the-new-ihg-premier-card/

    From that post:

Can the IHG 20% discount on purchased points be stacked with a sale?
This is one benefit that disappointed me. The IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card offers a 20% discount when you purchase points. In the terms there was nothing indicating that this couldn’t be stacked with a bonus on purchased points, which IHG frequently offers. However, unfortunately it seems that the two can’t be stacked.

The discount is automatically supposed to be applied at the time you purchase points, and that isn’t happening in conjunction with a sale. IHG customer service is confirming that these can’t be combined.

That’s a shame, as it renders this benefit almost useless. There’s no reason to get 20% off when you can otherwise buy points with a big bonus. For example, at the moment IHG Rewards Club is offering an 80% bonus when you buy points, which is an opportunity to acquire points for just 0.56 cents each.
