With United axing its stopover benefit in October, you may want to write a post of how to take advantage of a trip to South Africa with a stopover in Europe. This works great if you know how to work the system.

On the multiple itinerary option, I plugged in:

SFO-IST, (layover), IST-JNB (destination), JNB-CDG (stopover), CDG-SFO. 160,000 miles roundtrip in business, with a week in Europe on the way back. If you don’t do the IST part and plug in JNB directly the computer has virtually no J class options.

I’m flying next summer: SFO-IST direct on Turkish (tons of availability),
IST-Nairobi (with Turkish, layover 13 hours, enough time for a safari.)
    Nairobi-JNB (with South African)

A few days later, JNB-CDG (with Ethiopian)
then CDG-SFO direct on United in their first class (for an extra 5,000 miles.)
