So, I was upgraded from Economy to Business on a flight from DOH to LHR on Qatar, and I was wondering how it happened? I unknowingly went against almost every ‘how to get upgraded’ tip in the book??

(1) I wasn’t dressed well?
(2) I was travelling on Qatar Burgundy!! (And I was upgraded over someone with Oneworld Emerald, apparently!)
(3) I was travelling on a discounted ticket, can’t recall the exact fare class

I had a Seq number in the low 20s, and I was one of the last to show up at the gate, if that helps?

Most likely because economy was over sold, and if you were one of the last ones to show up they might have hoped you wouldn’t show up at all; so that was probably their last resort. The fare you paid and the way you dress don’t really matter.

+1 on all of the above…

It is easier to upgrade someone who has yet to board, so GAs will often go that route rather than a higher elite.

And clothing matters not one bit for upgrades. I laugh when I read articles that still tout that as a way to improve your upgrade chances. No one cares.

Thanks! I’ve been told that too about the way one dresses too, but it does seem to be in almost every ‘how to get an upgrade’ guide !
