Are you just asking generally? Or do you have a flight booked on a particular airline? The reality is that is difficult to get upgraded (for free) unless you are an elite member of an airline’s frequent flier program. I mostly fly AA, and I often get upgraded on the routes I fly. When I have flown something like DFW to LAX, not so much.

Another way is to pay for upgrades at the gate (or when checking in at a kiosk). I think United offers this quite a bit.

But to get back to your original question of how do you increase your probability – fly less business-heavy routes; fly on off days (Tuesdays); and work your way up to the top tier of an airline’s frequent flier program.
