Credit Card for Car Rental in Italy

Credit Card for Car Rental in Italy

Traveling to Italy in September and is there a credit card that provides car rental loss and damage insurance in that country.

Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve would work. I would just call Chase before you confirm anything to make sure the list of excluded has not been updated to include Italy.

In my experience renting cars in Italy over the past 15 years, I have not found a single rental company which will allow you to decline CDW. That said, even when paying for CDW, it typically doesn’t include the deductible which can be very high, typically €1000. I pay for the extra all inclusive coverage, which covers everything including the deductible. My credit card CDW coverages typically exclude Italy and Ireland.

I had a rental car stolen in Napoli back in 2013 and was not charged anything by the car company for the loss because I had the all inclusive coverage. Even with the all inclusive coverage, they will still “charge” your credit card €500 for incidental damage (tires and windshield) when you rent the vehicle but that charge is never processed if you return the car in good shape.
