CDMA phone service in HKG and PVG?

CDMA phone service in HKG and PVG?

  1. Dave K New Member

I’m heading from the US to HKG and PVG for the first time later this week. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S8+ on Verizon. I know I will need to buy SIM cards upon arrival in each city, but I’ve heard rumors that my phone won’t work there since Verizon phones are CDMA only. Does anyone know if I will need a GSM phone for these areas? (I know this is not a miles and points question, but wondered if I could draw upon your travel knowledge anyway.)

For the past few years, all Verizon phones that support their LTE network must have an unlocked GSM radio. It’s one of the government’s specific conditions for Verizon in order to be allowed to operate their LTE network. You should not have an issue popping in a local SIM and getting service in HKG and PVG.
