Booking a ticket for someone else, can I get credit for cancellation?

Booking a ticket for someone else, can I get credit for cancellation?

I could call United and find this out, but 1) I’m lazy and 2) I trust people here more than their agents…

First time experiencing this issue: I booked RT IAH-EWR on United for a few weeks from now. She was certain she was going and told me to book the cheapest (aka non-refundable) regular economy.

Low and behold, now she isn’t sure if the trip is happening. If I cancel, I know United issues a credit in the value of this trip towards another trip (plus a change fee). My question is, can I get this credit in my name, or does it have to go to her since it’s her name on the ticket, even though I purchased it?

Credit goes to the name on the ticket, unfortunately.
