Best airline (first class) from Chicago to Athens?

Best airline (first class) from Chicago to Athens?

  1. Anonymous Guest

First off, thank you so much for this blog! Your reviews are phenomenal and so detailed…I can’t tell you how helpful they are!

My wife and I are traveling to Athens, Greece (from Chicago) in 2017 to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We are leaning towards traveling first class, and I was wondering what you (or anyone) would recommend for this between Lufthansa, British Airways, or American Airlines? They are all similar in price so I was wondering what you would lean towards?

It has been a number of years since we have flown internationally, so any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Lufthansa hands down between those three. Enjoy the trip and congratulations on the anniversary :)!

Lufthansa, no question. You can see reviews of all three airlines here (just search by their names):

yea as @Gaurav said I’d take Lufthansa, for Lufthansa and United you would have access to the new Polaris lounge, on AA you would have acess to the new Flagship Lounge

(if you are flying directly out of ORD)

It’s also worth noting that for business class we would all likely have a different answer, realistically AA777-300 > BA > LH > AA old planes.

I’m surprised to see you rate BA over LH given Ben’s review of how many seats they cram into it – or is that a different BA product I’m thinking of? I recently flew LH J and it was quite pleasant if nothing super-special.

My guess would be that it comes down to if you value privacy. BA still offer single seats while LH is still in 2-2-2 configuration for the most part.

They’re very close. It might be a decision I made based on schedules, even, but I think BA has better IFE and better catering than LH, and a better business class service experience for non-German speakers.

If similarly priced, what about business class on Aeroflot or Turkish? @Lucky and @Tiffany had a fantastic time on Aeroflot and TK’s business class is always a solid option.

The 77W only ever has one frequency a day out of ORD and only some months, we have retrofitted 772s and refurbed 767s for early 2017

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to reply! I hadn’t considered Turkish Airlines…if that was added to the equation, would they rank higher than Lufthansa for you guys?

Our travel agent spoke highly of the Munich airport, and since we will have a little layover that was a little enticing since Lufthansa would go through that airport. Regardless of the airline, it looks like the flight from the European stop to Athens would be business class.

Thanks again…this site has been a wonderful find and you have all been very helpful with your insight!

Well, if you want to fly First class then TK is not really an option since they only operate J. So for first class products, LH is still the best option. If you are willing to fly business, TK is a good option.

I’m not sure Munich is something I’d go out of my way for. However, if you fly first, I’d try to route through Frankfurt. The LH first class terminal is located there which is one of the nicest first class lounges and worth a visit. I think Ben has reviews under his Trip Report section at the top of the page.

Turkish does have a very nice lounge in Istanbul though it’s not a separate terminal like LH has for First in FRA. Total travel time may be a couple of hours longer flying TK, if that’s a consideration.

Thanks Gaurav and MidSouthSkier for the replies…I will have to look into those options!

as I said before, on LH, you would have access to the awesome Polaris Lounge at ORD, which was debuted today, Turkish uses the crappy Swissport lounge

Does anyone like the comparison charts on www.routehappy.com? I like to see the comparisons of seats, IFE, time charts etc.

  19. Anonymous Guest

    The Polaris Lounge looks awesome!

  20. Anonymous Guest

We are looking at SwissAir too as an option…I’m sure Lufthansa’s strike will be over soon, but has made both of us a little uneasy. At least with SwissAir we could still do the Polaris Lounge!
