Amex Business Platinum v. CSR

Amex Business Platinum v. CSR

I’ve narrowed my next card down to the Amex Bus Plat or the CSR. The signup bonuses are great but not necessarily the biggest factor. What I am concerned with is the value of UR v. MR earned on the cards. The rub is this: The Amex Plat gives 1.5 MR/dollar on purchases over 5k with a limit of up to 1 million bonus miles annually through that program. I make individual weekly purchases over 5k on a weekly basis. If I am getting 1.5MR/dollar am I better off with the AMEX or is the extra value and flexibility of UR too much to pass up?

If it helps, the purchases are not travel or restaurant coded.

Any help would be great. I was all set to get the CSR until I noticed the 1.5x bonus for AMEX and started second guessing myself. I also already have an Amex Delta Reserve for the bonus MQM.

Well, I think the killer perk of the AX Business Plat (which is what you seem to be looking at) is the 2c/MR redemption values. On the earning side you can get an Everyday Preferred card which will earn you 1.5 points on all purchases and bonus points on groceries and gas with 30 purchases a month. You could combine that with the CSR which still give you the outstanding sign up bonus when going in branch until next month and the travel and restaurant bonuses. Maybe a combo worth considering? Of if you want to go all in on UR you could get a no-fee Freedom Unlimited to pair with the CSR.

Ultimately how you value your points will depend on your redemption patterns and which partners you are interested in. Most people tend to give UR a small edge over MR because of the transfer options but MR is not far behind and arguably better for some applications.

Agree with @Gaurav. But you hit the nail on the head with 1.5x on >5k purchases. Had a local business sign up for this specific reason as their purchases didnt fall in any multiple category but exceeded 5k each. The 100k sign up bonus didn’t hurt. They are killing it. The .5 bonus hits the day the charge is posted. Pay with points and 50% back made this a great deal for them.
