Alitalia shutting down – now what?

We have business class award seats with Alitalia for a trip October 7, returning October 22 – after their planned shutdown at the end of business on October 14.  Worse, we have another award tripped booked with Alitalia for March 22, 2022.

I’ve been on hold with Alitalia for an hour now, unable to get through.  I have not found any clear details online about what will happen to passengers scheduled to fly Alitalia on or after October 15.

Does anyone have some information or suggestions for us?

Thanks.

What miles did you use ? Since Alitalia is with SkyTeam, you could look into rebooking with Delta, KLM or Air France (the latter 2 would have a stopover but have tons of award availability and often reasonably priced awards).

Otherwise, if you have flexibility you should try moving up your trip by a couple of weeks if possible at all.
I’m also completely unclear on if the new airline that will launch, ITA, will be related at all to Alitalia and could accommodate passengers like you. Let us know if you find out.

Thanks Clem. Unfortunately, we booked with Amex MR points transferred directly to my MilleMiglie account. 80,000 miles for round-trip business class is hard to beat. Rebooking may be our only option. Sadly, using these points with the partner airlines is not nearly so favorable – 50,000 one way for economy and 100,000 for business.

I finally got through to Alitalia this morning only to learn they have no official information yet about what will happen. Some details are expected soon, whatever that means.

Bad news. Received emails early this morning from Alitalia canceling both legs of our October trip, even the October 7 departure. Not sure what I’ll do next. If I thought they would credit the miles back into my account quickly, I’d also cancel our March 2022 flights and try to book something on SkyTeam for October. No news about what the Italian government or ITA might do.

It just keeps getting worse.  Finally got through to AZ this morning.  First bad news, no partner awards availability to get us to Italy in October. Does that sound right?
Second, since Alitalia hasn’t officially cancelled the March 2022 trip, we cannot get those miles back.  Unbelievably at this time, they are citing MilleMiglia awards rules:  if the passenger cancels the award trip the miles are lost!  Really?? The agent had no information about when AZ might decide on March, but said they are working on something.

    Any advice?
