AA upgrade

AA upgrade

  1. JHG New Member

I have 4 paid economy AA tickets booked ATL-CLT-CDG this summer. I would like to credit the miles to Etihad but I am also interested in trying to upgrade one or two of the tickets (25k American miles + $350 each. I do not have status w AA.) Do I need to list our AA numbers for flight credit if I want to try for upgrades or can I still credit the miles to Etihad? Also, I am concerned that both flights have the same flight # (786), even though they are different airplanes. I’ve gotten conflicting reports from the AA agents, some of whom say that I might get charged for the upgrade even if only the ATL-CLT segment clears. Can anyone advise?

For your first question, you can list the AA flight number up until you get to the airport and then change to Etihad with the gate agent. That way the upgrade can clear when it’s listed as AA.

Not sure on the second question, maybe someone else can chime in with experience on flight numbers.

As for the second question, I’ve only done this once on AA 754 (SAN-PHL-CDG) and return with the plane change in PHL. I have status with AA so I requested upgrades and outbound both segments cleared but inbound the CDG-PHL cleared but not the PHL-SAN. I paid 25k miles both ways. Arriving at the airport in CDG coming back I had the opportunity to decline the upgrade. This was last year in May so I’m not sure with all the program changes if this is still the case. I would phone back and ask if you can decline the upgrade prior to departure if only the ATL-CLT segment clears.
