Not taking final leg of award flight to Rome
In about 8 weeks we are traveling on a one way awards ticket to FCO from SFO with a connection in ZRH. The flight to ZRH is with United. We are planning to check bags on this trip (almost never do). Do we collect our bags in ZRH to go through customs? If we decide not to continue to Italy (possible be cause of COVID) would this cause any problems?
My understanding is that you will clear immigration in ZRH but not customs. Your luggage will usually be checked through to Rome. You could try to ask for it to be checked till ZRH and see if the agent at the airport will do that for you.

That is correct. You clear immigration at your first “port of call” in the EU / Schengen zone; but your bags will be checked through and you exit customs at your destination. I’ve never tried to short-check bags (never had a need to) on a two-leg trip to Europe.
Thanks guys. If we make a last minute decision to jump ship in Zurich we will just have to go carry on only. We are still hoping to spend that first month in Rome. Strange times…
