Help! Swiss, Finnair, Korean Air or Cathay to Zurich?

Help! Swiss, Finnair, Korean Air or Cathay to Zurich?

  1. Alvin | YTHK Diamond

Hi! Booking a revenue ticket for family half a year out and need decision making help. To keep it short, my sister hates non-PTV flights, and I have a choice of taking the Finnair A350, Korean Air 777-200ER/777-300ER, Swiss 777-300ER or Cathay 777-300ER to Zurich. Don’t want to advertise, but I set up a poll on my blog – ignore the post if you want to, and vote at the bottom for me. Thanks!

If originating in HK and flying in economy, I’d choose KE or CX since its 3-3-3. AY isn’t a bad idea and is also 3-3-3 but the A350’s overall cabin isn’t as wide as the 77W

If originating in HK and flying in business, I’d go with either CX or AY since its 1-2-1 in a reverse herringbone configuration. LX’s 77W would be my second choice. KE’s 777’s are all either 2-2-2 or 2-3-2 which isnt as great.

Reading your very useful reply I realised I left something out here. All four of us are flying business, and while I’m not trying to advertise I have a travel blog too, which has about six posts on Cathay’s new business class, four posts on Korean Air’s Prestige Sleeper and nothing else. Much like Lucky want to try something new but really interested on what would be the best option at the same time since I wouldn’t want to be too daring with family.

Then purely from a seat perspective go with AY J if you are trying to get reviews on your blog. LX J product has been around for a while.

Sadly I have not had a chance to fly the AY A350 since the product is so new so can say what the entertainment system is like.

But if you are looking for unique content for your blog have you considered SK new J, has 1-2-1 seating?

Not even Lucky has review it yet and not that many reviews in English. Depends on when you are going as they are using the new A330 delivered last/this year and sometime the A340 on this route and not all the A340 is ready yet.

They fly HKG-ARN, downside would be taking SK Y+ product short haul in Europe and only 3 flights a week and connection time ARN might be a bit short on the return.

Also AF seems to be flying their upgraded B77W with 1-2-1 seating in a reverse herringbone configuration some days of the week to HKG.

And it’s possible to buy access to AF F ground services and lounge in CDG, but from reading all the comments on the article there might be some problem with the way AF runs it.

Downside is that if something goes wrong you might end up on one of their A380 with angle flat seats.

Any interest in SQ? They offer pretty competitive fares from HKG.

Yes, I do. But Dad doesn’t like how we’re flying south then north. Planning to go with itineraries that are both interesting and efficient at the same time.

Going to look into SAS, though for some reason can’t book business class on them (not even with only the HKG – ARN leg, which I’m sure has business class). I’m happy with Swiss, given that the product on the 777-300ER’s slightly different and it hasn’t even started rolling out yet, though I’m still trying to convince my family to fly Finnair. Also, looks like SAS new business class is staggered and not reverse herringbone? Thanks, No Name.

Sorry about that Alvin, you are right it’s staggered.

Had a web browser crash on me when writing the post, AF was meant to go first as it’s the best product and probably cheaper as well. But ended up last when I had time to start writing again several hours later, and somehow the 2 got mixed up.

Have updated my original post, thanks for catching it.

SK showed up for me on a OTA when I checked it a on random date and the link to booking on Expedia worked. Are you just finding economy?

Yup, just finding economy. If all else fails, I’d be excited to review Swiss’s revamped product on the 777-300ER. Exotic? No. Useful? Probably.

Looks like going with Swiss might be the best choice indeed. AF is a bust since the B77W has a first class cabin.

    From Lucky post
    http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2016/01/31/air-france-paid-lounge-access/

You’re flying on a longhaul Air France flight in business class

The flight is operated by a plane without a first class cabin
This was not mentioned in Lucky blog post last year or the link he posted then.

    Nor was this mentioned;

There are capacity controls, so during periods of high demand they may not sell access to the lounge
Sorry to have gotten your hopes up on AF.

To answer you question from the blog post about what Lucky is flying, the answer is a 3 class B772 without F.
    http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Air_France/Air_France_Boeing_777-200_C.php

Still looking forward to reading Lucky review about AF CDG ground services, but only being able to use this on flights without F does decrease the value of it.

Guess I’m not taking AF after all then. Product on the B77W looks nice, but having to navigate CDG is not worth it.
