On the UA website, the flights leaving on a Wednesday (when I need to depart) are long ordeals with multiple (3+) stops. Nothing about combining with AA and nothing going thru MIA. If you look at Google flights, it gives a flight from IAH to MIA on UA then MIA to STX on AA, and asks whether you want to book via UA or AA. They offer same in reverse for return. Is it possible to buy such a flight, where one leg is on a non-SA member? My preference is to fly UA since I hold elite status. If you check luggage, will it go thru all the way and would AA charge for the checked bag if I don’t have status with them? If I can pay UA for such a flight, do I get miles/elite credit for both segments or just the UA ones?

Unless I am missing something, you are having issues because United does not actually fly to St Croix.

You could fly United to Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami or Fort Lauderdale… but then you’d need Delta/American/Spirit to get all the way to the Caribbean. You would have to collect your bags and re-check wherever you are connecting.

UA doesn’t fly directly, but they have an arrangement with Cape Air from SJU. The problem is the flight from SJU is on a Cessna. If you use google flights, you find UA to MIA and the AA to STX, and the timing is better. I’m just trying to figure out how that works, and can you really purchase thru UA even though the second leg is AA.

If you can’t see it on the UA site you can call and ask if they can book it. If so, they *shouldn’t* charge you the phone-in fee since it can’t be booked online. But I can think of once in years past when I booked an award flight on the Delta site and there was a connecting leg on AA and I was able to book it online so perhaps it is possible.

At what dates are you looking? I can’t find any UA/AA itineraries, but I’ve only looked at a couple of Wednesday departures. ( I’m finding UA/Cape Air, UA/Seaborne, Delta/Seaborne and AA/Seaborne tickets, but no AA/UA itineraries. Does Google Flights list them as “must purchase separate tickets”?

I was looking at 4/14 depart but it’s on other dates as well. If you search google flights and put MIA as stopover, and look at “longer or more expensive” the UA/AA flight shows up. If you click, it offers purchase thru UA or AA, and if you select UA, it seems to be there as UA/AA flight, all together as one purchase.
