BA and Gatwick ?
BA continues to take bookings for flights through Gatwick (1st May today) from UK regional airports to Mediterranean destinations, for example. What is the likelihood that BA will not re-open a Gatwick service when flying from the UK to EU countries resumes?
I dont think they will close their Gatwick operations completely, given that they are maintaining a minimum of ground staff to give them the ability to reopen quicker when circumstances allow (see linked Independent article). While this crisis will temporarily ease the capacity struggles Heathrow is having, those struggles wont go away, so not counting an additional runway at LHR, they’ll need to plan for traffic. Demand will come back and BA are going to need an airport like Gatwick to address their European demand.
