Using United Miles to Upgrade to Lufthansa First Class from Business Class Reward

Using United Miles to Upgrade to Lufthansa First Class from Business Class Reward

Can I book round trip flights from JFK/EWR to Split/Dubrovnik using United miles for business class class (140k miles round trip) and if first class opens up prior to departure can I upgrade to first class one way for an additional 40k miles or both ways for 80k miles? If so, do I have to pay any additional fees? Thanks

Yes you can. I’m not sure if UA will let you change the award online but you should be able to call and get the award changed. UA does charge a change fee of $100 for each change.

Personally, I changed a UA award and paid the fee. I saw the charge on my credit card – it was pending for a few days then completely dropped off. It was strange, should not have happened but I didnt complain much since I ended up not paying a fee. However, its an error of some sort and a fee normally applies but maybe you’ll get lucky like I did?

Thanks David. What about if I use kris flyer miles to book Singapore business class and then first class award space opens up. Can I call Singapore airlines and use miles to upgrade from business to first or rebook in first? Thanks.

Yeah, that works too. SQ Krisflyer has some pretty low fees for changes and whatnot. You can book and ticket an SQ J award using Krisflyer as well as waitlist for F (if offered) If the waitlist clears, make sure you have enough Krisflyer Miles in your account so that you can upgrade! It something you should be able to do online but if you cant, call them.

Remember that when booking SQ awards on SQ’s website, there’s a 15% discount on miles needed!

Thanks again David. So I can use kris flyer miles to book business and wait list for first for the same flight?

    Yes

Unless you have enough miles for two bookings you’ll want to waitlist the first class flight first (since you have to have the miles needed for the booking at the time of waitlisting). You can then use the miles to book the J class award.
