Use miles JNB to SEZ?

Use miles JNB to SEZ?

My husband and I are headed to South Africa for 2.5 weeks in September thanks to Etihad’s “Christmas special”. We’re hoping to head over to the Seychelles for part of that time, but only if we can book the flights with miles. Our current points balances are:

    BA – 70,000
    AA – 160,000
    UR – 90,000
    MR – 10,000

Air Seychelles flies a direct flight JNB > SEZ that is operated by Etihad. I’ve read that you can book Etihad flights using AA miles, but when I search for this route on the Etihad site, it doesn’t exist. Any other ideas for how we could make this work?

The JNB-SEZ flight is a HM flight using A330s leased from Etihad – not an actual Etihad flight. I don’t even believe it is codeshared by EY for local traffic.

Your only real options with the miles you have is to transfer UR to United and then redeem 35000 RT each in Economy for JNB-ADD-SEZ vv on Ethiopian. Your travel time will be 14+ hrs though as you are backtracking significantly. You could also transfer UR to Korean and then redeem 25000 RT each in Economy (45000 RT each in Business) and travel on Kenya AIrways JNB-NBO-SEZ. Once again, travel time is around 12 hours each way.

I think Sean M. nailed it. The Seychelles are a tough place to get to on miles!
