SFO-HKG Award Help

SFO-HKG Award Help

  1. erik New Member

    Hey guys,

My trip for 2 passengers is as follows:

    1) SFO-HKG
    2) HKG-SIN-SYD(SQ Suites) – Booked
    3) SYD/MEL-HKG-SFO(CX J) – Will probably book by this weekend

I’m looking for suggestions using my stash of UA balance, but I have MR as well if that provides better options to go SFO-HKG.

Looking at UA availability for travel for mid-end of Janurary 2018, the only confirm-able seats are with EVA in J or CA in J/F which i’m not too interested in. Ideally, if i see SFO-HKG on Polaris or OZ/ANA/LH awards, i’d pull the trigger. However, there are currently non of that available.

For MR, I can transfer to Asia Miles and fly nonstop CX J/F, but since I’m already flying a CX J route from SYD/MEL-HKG-SFO, that would be my 2nd option. I want to try different airlines!

With roughly 8 months to go, what would you do in my situation? I know there may be last minute availability, but I rather not take that risk. Any other options I should consider?

On a side note, is the process of getting a birthday cake easy while flying SQ suites? I’m looking to request/pay for one. When should I put the request in?

If you need to confirm something soon and/or have set travel dates that dont have much flexibility, go with EVA. EVA is pretty good, and it’s confirmable. Could be worth paying change fees when/if NH/OZ F or UA J Polaris becomes available, especially in your case. LH wont have space until about 2 weeks out.

If you can find space on JAL F, your AsiaMiles can go toward that too.

Ordering a cake for SQ should be simple enough – just call.

I’ve used my UA miles many times to book award flights.I’ve seen a lot of saver award space on EVA J for roughly 80K one way which for Eva J isn’t that bad. Saver space for polaris might be a little tough to come by, but still, try for it. I have not seen any in my attempts on that route. But I’ve seen plenty of Eva J out of LAX to TPE and I can’t imagine that would be much different out of SFO even if you are going to HKG
