Putting AA Award Seat on Hold Before Calling Customer Service

Putting AA Award Seat on Hold Before Calling Customer Service

  1. Anonymous Guest

I’m trying to secure two AA business class awards on a round trip LAX-JFK trip but, as you can imagine, you can’t just find two seats in both directions at once so I’ve been putting it together piecemeal as one seat becomes available at a time on different flights.

On the return, I currently have one seat ticketed on my preffered flight and one ticketed for my wife on a flight that leaves an hour later. My hope is that one more seat will open up on one of the flights and I’ll move the other person to that flight. BUT if/when that seat becomes available (I’m using Expertflyer alerts) should I grab it and place it on hold online before calling AA to make the award ticket change (so someone else doesn’t grab it in the meantime) or is that a bad idea because then the seat is not available to even the agent when I call (unless I cancel the hold during the call and then keep fingers crossed the seat is immediately returned to award inventory)? Just wondering what you more experienced travelers do in this case.

This is for flights about 3 months out if that’s relevant.

    Thanks,
    John

Hi! Unless you’re and EXP that’s a bad idea, because then the seat isn’t available to an agent. Just call as soon as you can if you aren’t able to make the change online.

Thanks for the quick reply, Tiffany!
