Issue with rebate from AAdvantage card when redeeming award travel
As many of you know one of the benefits of the Citi AAdvantage card is you get a 10% rebate on miles you redeem for award travel up to a maximum of 10K miles per calendar year.
There is an issue with the way American handles the 10% rebate when award tickets are exchanged. It seems that the system generates the 10% rebate award but the award never gets counted in your balance. This actually makes sense as you got the rebate award when you made you original redemption.
So here’s my issue: I exchanged award tickets in January this year (for travel in February that I completed) and received this phantom award of 10K which did not counted in my balance. A few months ago I then redeemed 115K miles for a completely different trip but was not awarded the 10K rebate presumably because the system thought I had reached the yearly maximum in January. But the 10K rebate in January didn’t count so I should be eligible for 10K now.
I’ve talked to American Advantage customer service twice who claim that I really did get the 10K even though the final monthly balance doesn’t include it. Has anyone encountered this before and if so successfully convinced AA to grant the 10K rebate for the second redemption.
Thanks
Neil
I haven’t. Have you tried to escalate in writing or through the social media team. If you can attach screenshots of your account it should be pretty clear if the rebate was issue or not.
