IB or AV business class
Hi Lucky,
I’ve been reading your stuff for quite a while now and want first to thank you for all that useful content.
Still, I’m stuck on one dilemma, could you help me out on that one.
For a flight LIM-MAD in march, I have to choose between the direct flight IB6650 on a A340-500 in their kind of new (I believe) business class or LIM-BOG-MAD (AV24 + AV10) on both segments a B787-8 dreamliner new business class with a 80 minute stop-over. I’ll travel alone.
Which one would you pick by knowing it’s 80K miles with lifemiles and 50K + about 100 USD more in taxes with AAdvantage ?
regards,
simon
Welcome.
Are you thinking about the A340-600?

I don’t think IB has any A340-500.
Where do you have the most miles?
If you have a lot of AA miles that you want to burn before any possible devaluation go for AA.
If on the other hand you have a lot of Lifemiles and few AA miles use the Lifemiles.
It seems it’s a refurbished A340-600 (the one you linked 😉 ). See http://www.businesstraveller.com/discussion/topic/Airbus-A340-500
and the wiki of http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/iberia-airlines-iberia-plus/1448998-new-business-plus-class-a330-300-a340-deployed-2013-2014-consolidated.html
About the programs, the miles of both accounts probably need to be burned ;-). Actually AV business class seems a bit better (newer), but is it a hard product worth to be flown/discovered for that bit more expensive and longer trip ?

Welcome Simon
Well the Dreamliner can be nice and is newer, but not sure how many AV have of them yet. Wiki says 5, if something goes tech (we are talking about a 787 after all) you would most likely end up on an older plane with bad product.
On the flip side IB seems to have updated most of their A346 so less chance of you ending up on a old bird with bad product and it’s direct flight so no chance of a misconnect.
I think I would go with IB on this one, even with the risk of IB not loading bags. Seriously how can an airline forget to load bags on a direct flight in 2015?
While Lifemiles do indeed need to be burned there is no devaluation coming that we know of, AA looks a lot more likely. Even so AA miles are more usefully in general than Lifemiles.
In the end it’s your choice.
Thank you no name for the replies. It helped to decide.
My IB flight is now booked.
cheers
