IAD to NRT with stopover in PVG

IAD to NRT with stopover in PVG

    Hi Lucky,
I am traveling to Shanghai next March for a couple of weeks (for my wedding!) and want to visit Japan on my way back. So far my research has not showed any great award redemption choices. I’ve considered 70k UA round trip, Singapore airline (which routes to Frankfurt), AA (no stopover allowed), Korean Airline 70k round trip, etc. Can you please advice?

I have 70k+AA miles, 60k+ Ultimate Rewards points, 50K+ Thankyou points, and my fiance has 30k spg points.

    Thank you!

Will you be departing from the US? With the mention of Frankfurt I wasn’t sure.

Korean has a lot of funky rules based on whether you’re only flying on their planes or only on partners. See Lucky’s post from last year about this topic. But if you can make it work for you what about doing an open-jaw – fly into PVG, use the AA miles (or TY points or cash if the flights are cheap) to get to Japan and the depart from Japan on the second half of the Korean ticket.

@Tiffany may have other suggestions as she’s booked more things like this than I have!
