Fare Class with Econ Plus to Upgrade

Fare Class with Econ Plus to Upgrade

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile and, for better or worse, beginning to turn my love of travel into a lot of time thinking about miles, credit cards and status. Anyhow, my family of three is planning a trip to Israel in about a year. Ideally, we will fly business class but we don’t have a ton of miles (I currently have about 130,000 and earning about 10,000/month. Husband has 31,000 and daughter has only 8,000). When I look at the upgrade chart for United, there are different mile and $$ requirements depending on fare class. The least expensive tickets are S class, the lowest class. Would it behoove us to first upgrade to economy plus? Does that change our fare class, and then we could apply points for upgrades? Right now it looks like it would be 70,000 miles and $1,200 per tickets to upgrade.

Any other strategies we might employ to keep costs down and fly three people business class to Israel with only 150-200,000 points? Thanks so much for any advice you might have!!!

@kimpossible9802 – welcome! Can I assume that the miles you refer to are all United miles? What part of the US would you be flying from? What points/miles-earning credit cards do you have now? Usually using miles to upgrade is not the best use of miles but with a little more info maybe we can come up with something.

Thanks for the reply MidSouthSkier! My miles are on United and Ultimate Rewards. (I have a small amount on other airlines but much less.) We are flying from Cleveland. We have Chase Sapphire (main spending), United Presidential Plus (for flights), Marriott Rewards Visa (for hotel), and Capital One Venture (not used once we received sign up bonus). All four cards are under my name with husband as authorized user. Right now, tickets are $1,200 and business class is $5,000. Please let me know if any other info would be helpful. Thanks!

Well you can just look away from any so called miles on Capital, that is really a cash back card.

Just so I understand–you’re thinking of buying a S class economy ticket, then using miles and cash to get to Premium Economy, and then using more points and cash to get to business?

  6. kimpossible9802 New Member

I am considering buying Premium Economy and then using points and cash to upgrade to business. But I can only see fare class in economy when I search. So when I look at the upgrade chart, I don’t know which fare class I will be in if I buy an economy plus ticket.
