Etihad A380 J for B787 F (AA Award)

Etihad A380 J for B787 F (AA Award)

I have a two part question based on the devaluation of the first class partner AA award chart and my current bookings. I have a J booking using AA miles on Etihad from AUH to SYD (A380). Because of the devaluation and my intent to fully liquidate my AA miles I am trying to upgrade to F, but the availability on that route is slim to none right now. I am looking at modifying my award to AUH to BNE in Etihad F and BNE to SYD in Qantas J. The origin and destination wouldn’t change and the dates wouldn’t either; however, there is an additional stop and the inclusion of another airline. Part one is will I incur the $150 charge or not? I have read recently that people have had problems with this change, but I’m speaking theoretically.

Part two is simple, not considering miles would make a change from nonstop A380 J to a connected B787 F? What do you value?

@Aerov53 personally I wouldn’t switch. I believe people have had trouble when the award switches from EY to OW partners so it might not be easy to do. In the big picture, first class is nice but so is EY J. If you were switching to 380F I would say definitely go for it but in this case the difference is not huge (for me). The other thing is that while AA miles have certainly devalued, they have not become worthless. I wouldn’t burn them just to burn them.
