Dual loyalty programs helpful ?
Hi, i’m following your adventures with interest.
First off,I think your travel schedule and logistics are just AWESOME !
No clue how you do it but always wanted to ask a question and pick your brain.
I have about 250,000 United Mileage Plus points.I’m also a Million Miles member.
And i hate United and their way of gaming business class upgrades.
I fly 2-3 times a year to Bangkok on ANA and pay full fare B.C..since they never seem to have
anything available for upgrades.
I was wondering if by joining ANA’s mileage program i might improve my chances, perhaps i could
even use my United miles for an ANA flight.
Anyone having any thoughts on that idea would be very much appreciated.

You can use your MP miles to upgrade tickets on ANA but there has to be space and be booked in specific fare classes. I think you would need to book through UA but not 100% certain on this. The details are here: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/mileageplus/awards/upgrade/saua.aspx. You’d need to call to confirm the space before you book otherwise you risk having to travel in your booked fare class. My understanding is that upgrades are hard to come by like you have noticed.
Have you considered setting up a dummy account with ANA to see how much space they make available to their own program members? Airlines do often allocate more space for their own flyers.
