Delta or Alitalia FF New York to Italy?

Delta or Alitalia FF New York to Italy?

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hi there,

    I am planning a trip to Italy around Christmas, and would like to transfer SPG points to a frequent flier program to either subsidize the cost of one of our coach tickets (we are two adults, one small child, one lap infant) or upgrade us to business on at least one leg of the flight.

    Which mileage program – Delta or Alitalia – will give me the biggest bang for my buck? I tried comparing prices on their websites and am more confused than when I started.

    I only have about 60,000 points available (including the 5,000 bonus per 20k miles transferred), so I don’t know if I can even use them for this trip. (We were originally planning to go next summer, when we’d presumably have more points to spend, but a relative has fallen ill and we need to go much sooner.)

    I don’t expect us to fly much over the next few years (two small children & no nanny :), but if we do it will likely be to Italy, maybe via Ireland. Are Delta and Alitalia even my best options? Am I totally missing something else?

    Thanks so much for any help – I’m new to this!

    @Lindsay — Welcome!

    If you can purchase premium economy, then upgrading through Alitalia might be the best option: http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2014/11/20/use-alitalia-miles/

    Otherwise I’d work on bolstering your mileage balances for a future trip, I think.
