CX: Paid Economy to Award Biz Switcheroo?

CX: Paid Economy to Award Biz Switcheroo?

  1. Anonymous Guest

A few weeks ago I took advantage of that insane LAX-HKG fare war and snagged a sub-$400 economy ticket on CX, but can only get away for four short days over Labor Day Weekend.

I’ve got a healthy stash of AS miles, and had the bright idea that instead of flying home in the back of the plane, I should try and ditch the return leg and redeem for biz or ideally first. I know that CX premium cabin space is unlikely to open up until much closer to my flight, and there’s a chance I might not see anything until I’m already in Hong Kong.

My question is this: I’m currently booked on the 3SEP 12:30pm flight. If I find biz/first space on the 12:05am flight on 4SEP, will that set off alarm bells in CX’s system that I’m holding seats on two HKG-LAX flights departing within 12 hours of each other? I obviously can’t afford to have my outbound economy flight auto-cancel before I depart…

    TIA!

For CX, higher class of service tickets are usually cancelled first, especially if these are partner awards. So I would not be worried about not being able to take these economy flights as planned.

You could probably just not give your paid economy reservation your frequent flier info until you check-in at the gate, that way it wouldn’t be immediately tied to you and wouldn’t trigger any warnings.
