I would like to fly United from Chicago to London in First Class using points. What is the best strategy for using the least number of points

    Well, your non-stop choices are:
    American – 62.5K SAAver awards
    British Airways – 80K Avios
    United – 57.5K on a 2-class aircraft (Econ/Bus), 80K on a 3-class aircraft (Econ/Bus/First)
    Virgin Atlantic – 40K miles

If you fly on BA metal you’ll pay fuel surcharges, regardless of whether you use AA or BA currency. Virgin also has fuel surcharges. Expect these surcharges to be > $400 USD for BA First Class or Virgin’s Upper Class.
