Best option to Bali in business- 1 ticket on miles, 1 cash economy using miles to upgrade
Here’s the situation:
Bf has work trip to Bali in early Dec but his company will only pay for coach (boo!). I want to tag along but I refuse to fly that itin in coach. What is the best option for getting us both in business class without breaking the bank on an upgrade surcharge (and finding adequate award availability)? I’d prefer to use AA miles but UR could possibly work too.
Thanks!

Welcome.
If you are thinking about using AA miles to upgrade a coach ticket on CX, then sadly that can not be done.
Upgrade is only possible with AA miles on AA, BA and IB.
If you fly AA to HKG it should possible to upgrade to J from Y cabin on US-HKG part of the flight.

That said it’s not very good use of miles as an award US-Asia2 (which include HKG and Bali) is 55K for J and 67,5K for F, and that could include travel on CX the whole way.
Agreed, I would probably book the award ticket in business class, then try and get the boyfriend on the same or similar flights. Combining award and revenue tickets can be really complicated 🙁
