BA Companion Ticket
I have 130,000 Avios and a free companion ticket through my BA Visa Signature Chase card. I am needing to fly from CLT to ARN, but in order to redeem the companion ticket, it can only be done on BA operated flights. Therefore, I’m looking at booking IAD to ARN, and booking a separate flight for the CLT to IAD leg.
For two business class tickets, it is charging me 125,000 Avios +$1995 in taxes/fees. It seemed that the difference in taxes/fees between economy class and business class was negligible…I think around $1450 vs $1995. Is that typical for BA award tickets?
Also, is it best to book with Avios, or to book with money and upgrade with Avios?
It depends on ticket prices since not all fare classes are upgradable.
This article is a little old and the charts might be slightly out of date but the rest of the information still holds true. Hope it helps! http://onemileatatime.boardingarea.com/2015/09/20/upgrade-british-airways-avios/
If you want to use the companion ticket, you’ll have to book directly versus buying a ticket and upgrading. Those taxes all sound about right.
