American Milessaver Int’l flights

American Milessaver Int’l flights

Hi Lucky – Could use your advice on booking a round trip flight from LAX to Munich on American over the weekend of 9/29 – 10/1 (flexible with dates). I am Executive Platinum and have a bunch of miles and 500-mile upgrades. Yet it seems like the only way to book this trip in business class is to blow 250,000 miles. Does that seem right? It is pretty frustrating to be 6 months out, have the flights show mostly open seats, yet I cannot use milessaver miles for business or first. I’ve also been told that booking economy class using miles and then trying to upgrade using 500-mile upgrades will not work. Thoughts? Do I wait for business class milessaver options to become available?

AA has had very limited availability based on recent reports. Look at wikipedia for which oneworld airlines fly from LAX to Europe and then search segment by segment to see if you can get an itinerary that works for you. If you see something that gets you across the Atlantic you might also consider getting a cheap paid ticket to connect you to MUC. Conversely you could also check for flights from other AA gateways in the US and get a paid domestic flight to connect.

500 mile certificates can’t be used outside of domestic and Caribbean/Central America flights I believe.

Unfortunately, it’s been like this all year with AA milesaver business class flights to Europe.

Yeah, their saver level space is just incredibly nonexistent. All you can really do is to keep searching and hope for the best. Are you only looking at their flights out of LAX? What about space out of one of their other hubs, like ORD, JFK, DFW or CLT and add connecting flights on either end. You might also find something on BA, even though the surcharges are quite high. They do serve quite a handful of US destinations.

If you really have no choice but to blow 250k miles, make it fun? CX LAX-HKG-FRA with two awards.
