Spirit Airlines Jet Shot At On Approach To Haiti, Prompting Diversion

21

Haiti has been dealing with quite a bit of unrest in recent years, which has been challenging for airline operations, in terms of balancing the desire to serve markets with demand, while also factoring in safety. For the most part, US airlines have resumed service to Haiti as of earlier this year, though with new safety protocols.

Well, I suspect that’s about to change, given an incident that happened today…

Spirit Airlines jet hit by bullets on approach to Port-au-Prince

This incident happened today (Monday, November 11, 2024), and involves Spirit Airlines flight NK951, scheduled to fly from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Port-au-Prince (PAP). The 720-mile flight was operated by a one-year-old Airbus A320neo with the registration code N966NK.

The aircraft took off at 9:16AM local time, beginning the roughly two hour flight to Haiti. However, while on approach to Port-au-Prince, the plane was shot at, with several bullets piercing the fuselage, toward the rear part of the aircraft.

Video footage and pictures from inside the cabin show damage to some overhead bins. One flight attendant was also injured, and was reportedly grazed by a bullet. Gosh, when you’re on approach to an airport, you don’t expect that you’re going to be shot at, so that’s pretty terrifying.

The jet diverted to nearby Santiago de los Caballeros, in the Dominican Republic, which doesn’t have the same issues with unrest, and is only 124 miles away. The plane touched down there at around 11:32AM, 2hr16min after it departed Fort Lauderdale.

The airline is now arranging to have another aircraft sent to the Dominican Republic to pick up passengers, and fly them back to Fort Lauderdale. After all, you can’t just strand people in a foreign country.

Airlines are suspending flights to Port-au-Prince

As you’d expect, the US airlines that do fly to Port-au-Prince have made the decision to suspend flights for the time being. A JetBlue flight was enroute to Port-au-Prince when the incident happened, and the decision was made to return to Fort Lauderdale.

A JetBlue flight returned to Fort Lauderdale

Airlines like American, JetBlue, and Spirit, have all canceled their Port-au-Prince flights for the coming days. While these cancelations are just for a few days for the time being, I wouldn’t be surprised to see these cancelations extended much longer than that.

Bottom line

A Spirit Airlines Airbus A320neo was shot at while on approach to Port-au-Prince this morning. The bullets passed through the fuselage and into the cabin, causing a minor injury to one of the flight attendants. The good news is at least that the injuries weren’t more serious.

Many airlines are now suspending service to Port-au-Prince, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that extended for quite some time…

What do you make of this Spirit Airlines incident in Port-au-Prince?

An infant could eat a bowl of alphabet spaghetti and poop out a much more intelligent missive than whatever the Eskimo just posted.
Clearly, if one is looking for interesting and informative comments then one will, in the main, be disappointed by the immature comments from some.
Drivel is drivel regardless of one’s place of birth or educational background and just like my TV set, this website can be a real turn-off depending upon who post the comments.

      You seriously need help.

Before we can talk about immature.

Obsessed with infant poop is creepy.
Reading infant poop as alphabet pasta is sick.
Having an epiphany after seeing poop as BA LHR DEN which makes you fly every month, that even the best doctors can't fix you.

You're probably the first and only one who had to repeat nursery for 15 years. They had to fail you in nursery until they had...

You're probably the first and only one who had to repeat nursery for 15 years. They had to fail you in nursery until they had enough of you playing with other infant's poop.

Next time you see an infant poop saying BA. Don't try to defend it. That BA is full of sh*t.

    A few bullets, meh.

Lucky for the locals. Haiti isn't on some disputed holy island or have discovered any significant energy resources yet.

If this was Port-au-Gaz, Haibanon. The protestors would be labeled as terrorists organization Haitillah and Haitimas.

And we'll see advanced Western built munitions all over the island because NATO wants it's puppet Hailenskyy to be a buffer against the coup.

Of course, all this would be a nice cover propaganda for imperialists...

Of course, all this would be a nice cover propaganda for imperialists to plunder something more than bananas. They would be flying 20 daily flights just to bait that single bullet and spark a full scale defense for the A320 from WMDs. Oil fields are just part of keeping peace anything other than that is fake news.

Idiotic made-up names aside, you ain't lying about this @Eskimoo.

      @Eskimo...

Wowza. What an absurd and feeble-minded idiot. You won the internet today with sheer stupidity,

    3. Eskimo Guest

It's not a competition. Only you who cares about winning the internet.
Being a brainwashed snowflake among snow doesn't make you less of a snowflake. You just see bunch of snowflakes and think it's normal.

Of course a human among a herd of donkeys would be "feeble-minded" in the eyes of the entire herd. Now go lick other ass and win the internet.

And that's why the brilliant propaganda still works. You deserve all the credit and internet awards.

NATO isn't using Ukraine as a buffer, Zelenskyy is the one pleading with NATO for more weapons that the US has reluctantly feed dripping a few months too late to be actually advantageous in getting the upper hand with Russia. From Day 1 he has been the one arguing that the invasion of his country is the entree of to a larger conflict and a decisive victory in Ukraine will stop further escalation.

Regarding Gaza, that one is all yours

      @Tracy

You have to go back when Obama planted the seed. He put Zelenskyy's predecessor there.
NATO wanted to put weapons in Russia's front yard. Ukraine is baited by the prospect of membership. But NATO doesn't want the upper hand in Ukraine, they need them to be strong enough to keep defending, but weak enough to not advance into Russia. They even convinced them F-16 would be a game changer, may in the 80s...

They even baited the neutral Finland and Sweden to pick sides.

NATO as a defense grid ended with the fall of USSR. Now it's the military arm of a political propaganda.

I'm curious as to who is even going to Haiti currently?

    1. ps241 Guest

Exactly my question as well. I'm astounded to learn there are three U.S. airlines flying to Haiti given the current state of the country - who is taking these flights?

    2. El Dictador Guest

      Haitians perhaps?

    3. BradStPete Diamond

Probably friends, family, relief workers. I can't imagine going on holiday there.

    4. PointsandMilesDoc Member

We have a whole surgical team there right now. :(

And a lot of OMAAT brainwashed hypocrites, because they endorse that Central/Latin America is safe due to their PCism.

    6. Peter Guest

Oh stop it. Haiti is unique to Haiti. Latin America is nothing like that anywhere.

    7. Davisson Guest

I went to Haiti back in 2016 on a mileage run. Was a very interesting experience to say the least. I wouldn’t fly there even if you give me money today.

so as Cuba, Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute, yet you can fly from US to Cuba on a typical nonstop ticket operated by a US carrier.

  5. Jim Guest

It's giving echoes of Robertsfield in the '90s.
