Since President Trump took office in January 2025, we’ve known that he planned to introduce a new travel ban, targeting citizens of certain countries. Well, those details have just been announced, and we’re seeing new restrictions for travelers from 19 countries.
In this post:
Trump’s new travel ban kicks in June 9, 2025
When he took office on January 20, 2025, Trump issued Executive Order 14161, titled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.” Over the past several months, national security agencies have been “engaged in a robust assessment of the risk that countries posed to the United States, including regarding terrorism and national security.”
With that in mind, we’re finally seeing new restrictions based on this. As of June 9, 2025, the United States will fully restrict and limit the entry of nationals from 12 countries, “found to be deficient with regards to screening and vetting, and determined to pose a very high risk to the United States.” These countries include the following:
- Afghanistan
- Burma
- Chad
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Eritrea
- Haiti
- Iran
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Yemen
Furthermore, the United States will partially restrict and limit the entry (for B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J visas) of nationals from seven countries that “pose a high level of risk,” including the following:
- Burundi
- Cuba
- Laos
- Sierra Leone
- Togo
- Turkmenistan
- Venezuela
This proclamation includes exceptions for lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, certain visa categories, and individuals whose entry serves national interests.

How Trump justifies new travel restrictions
In 2017, we saw Trump impose his first travel ban, an executive order titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.” This included banning travel for people from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
As you can see, the new ban list is significantly bigger, and doesn’t just include Muslim countries. However, as the countries under consideration were described some time back, they’re “generally Muslim-majority or otherwise nonwhite, poor and have governments that are considered weak or corrupt.” In total, hundreds of millions of people are from the countries that are on this ban list (though admittedly most people from those countries probably don’t have plans to travel to the United States in the coming years).
The White House provides an explanation for why each country is on the list. For example, here’s the explanation for Afghanistan:
The Taliban, a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) group, controls Afghanistan. Afghanistan lacks a competent or cooperative central authority for issuing passports or civil documents and it does not have appropriate screening and vetting measures. According to the Fiscal Year 2023 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Entry/Exit Overstay Report (“Overstay Report”), Afghanistan had a business/tourist (B1/B2) visa overstay rate of 9.70 percent and a student (F), vocational (M), and exchange visitor (J) visa overstay rate of 29.30 percent.
And here’s the explanation for the Republic of the Congo:
According to the Overstay Report, the Republic of the Congo had a B1/B2 visa overstay rate of 29.63 percent and an F, M, and J visa overstay rate of 35.14 percent.
Interestingly, when Trump announced the new travel ban, he specifically referenced the recent terror attack in Boulder, which was carried out by an Egyptian. So I find it curious that Egypt isn’t impacted by these new restrictions in any form…

Bottom line
President Trump has just announced the details of a new travel ban. It impacts travelers from 19 countries, with those from 12 countries being almost entirely banned from visiting the United States, and those from seven countries having new restrictions. We knew this was coming, and it’s one of the biggest travel bans that we’ve ever seen in the country…
The stupid government of my country (Australia) welcomed people from Somalia and Sudan, and of course they now make up a large part of the crime problem in my city (Melbourne). Trump's restrictions make perfect sense.
Don't support this ban but what an effective ragebait it is.
There is lots of evidence that Trump took a $10 million dollar bribe from the president of Egypt in 2016. You can read this in he Washington Post article.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2024/08/02/trump-campaign-egypt-investigation/
And more recently, he got a nice bribe in the form of the UAE government buying a $2 BILLION dollar stake in Binance. They did this through a "stablecoin" called USD1, which, surprise surprise, is owned by a Trump corporation. Trump earns fees every time USD1 is traded. Follow the money.

And beyond that, write your Democrat senators to reject the GENIUS act in the senate. The crypto "industry" has been paying multiple D Senators including Adam Schiff, Ruben Gallego, and others to try and get GENIUS passed under the guise of enabling anti-money laundering actions against stablecoin issuers, but the gov can already go after those issuers under exist money laundering statutes. All GENIUS does is legitimize another Trump crypto venture, and legitimize crypto in general.

Unequivocally excludes Iraq because it is mired in civil war now. At home, we lost "the war on drugs" and "the war on terror" if you count native born/ trained terrorists. Homeland Security Dept. has cut budget to fight terrorism and diverts funds to ICE. Read the following articles to understand more how the US destabilizes Muslim governments and the human, economic and environmental costs to those countries and US taxpayers.

Like I have said before, US keep making Friends All over the world just to keep people from a tiny nation in the ME Happy. The only difference being Myanmar & Congo and not supported by 99% of US Politicians like this tiny country in ME.

Only these "Special" people get rides urgently by Helicopters because they burnt their Finger or their clothes caught fire in Colorado.Never mind that 200 Hungry children were shot Dead point Blank on their Head & chest the next Day in Gaza. Not a Peep from any US Politicians, But non stop 24/7 coverage in US media about the Fire incident in Colorado.
Oh, By the way, US vetoed the urgent need to give Food to residents in Gaza at the UN.
And for those of us who support what Israel is doing in Gaza? The Palestinians declared war on us the night of September 11th when they danced in the streets. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, especially if they were already friends to begin with.
Palestinians on 9/11? lol!
They were having a big LOL as they watched the Twin Towers burn and collapse. Not lolling much now, are they? They're terrorists, future terrorists, and enemies of America. Destroy them.
One group was videod celebrating, so somehow that endicts a whole people. Some Zionists were also cheering on 9/11 too, fyi.
ban nationals from all other about 170 world countries and enjoy even more security. Everybody coming voluntarily to the one and only country must be a fool.
The best part is they chose the wrong Congo. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the war torn hellhole. The Republic of Congo is the one they banned.
I would expect nothing less from the trump regime
And the terrorist in CO was from Egypt, which isn't on the list. This admin is run by petulant children.
The aircraft hijackers in the September 11 were 19 men. They hailed from four countries; 15 of them were citizens of Saudi Arabia, two were from the United Arab Emirates, one was from Egypt, and one from Lebanon.
Why don't they ban citizens of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates?
Because Trump and the MAGA cult are idiots, obviously.
They were all men. Ban all men?
Seriously? That's your conclusion?
Typical MAGA mind(less)...
Ricardo, the answer to your question: “Why don't they ban citizens of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates?”.
Simply ….. $$$ and more $$$ from the Arab states.
Travel bans have nothing to do with danger, but more to do with relations.
Don't ban people from Chad. Ban Chads and Karens. Of course, that would impact MAGA Morons significantly.
…. :-)
These countries have horrible human rights but the liberals of course will knock Trump for a travel ban. Personally, I don't think there should be travel bans. If one travels to a country and they're too stupid to know the risk that's on them. We don't need the nanny state.
But go to these countries with your pride flag and see how gracious the locals are.
Another barely coherent Romey post
Those that do not suffer from TDS see it as completely coherent. But again take your Pride flag to some of these countries and see what the reaction is. Maybe you can enlighten me on how these countries protect vulnerable populations. But you can't and you wouldn't.
@George
I want people from those countries to come here for education, business, and tourism so that they can be exposed to other viewpoints or escape from their own crappy governments and contribute to our country instead. I'm sure you'd agree that the government doesn't always hold the same views as the average person. One of the nicest and most patriotic people I've ever known was a guy who immigrated from Iraq back when it was under Saddam Hussein's reign.
It is unclear whether George thinks this is a ban against nationals of these countries visiting the US or a ban against US nationals visiting these countries. Very bizarre behavior.
I'm pretty sure you'd face no issues whatsoever in Laos with a pride flag.
So you’re ok then with the queer people from those countries being anle to visit the US?
Also maybe instead of focusing on how queer people overseas are treated, maybe worry about the US regressing on how it is starting to treat it’s own queer people.
Since we’ve all seen what’s happened to Europe, it would be wise to ban any travel to/from any and all Muslim country.
Saudi Arabia should have been on this list then
Last i checked life in Europe is pretty good.
@Ben - there’s a mistake in the 2nd paragraph. The actual list doesn’t include Syria but you list it here:
“This included banning travel for people from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.”
Being cheeky now …. There is no mention of the Palestinian people, no one in the world wants them either …. :-)
Only vile scumbags like you think that way.
Aaron …. Thank you for proving that your mindset is as pathetic as your command of the English language. However, perhaps I misinterpreted your post and it is to the Palestinian Hamas terrorists you refer, yes?
@AeroB13a
If you're proud of your English origin, wouldn't you at least have to when to use "an" and "a" right?
Make England Great Again?
The first step is to get rid of AeroB13a.
The only vile scumbag I am referring to here is you.
And your command of the English language isn’t exactly world class.
@Aaron
Putting your obsession with making everyone asinine aside, don't bother with this demented rotten BA apologist.
I don't want Palestinians in my yard either, I mean why do we have to.
We should handle them to the UK where the problem has originated.
Not sure why my use of the wors asinine triggers you so much. But a hit dog will always holler, I guess…
Alao, maybe just have the Palestinians be allowed to settle in the land that is theirs…

It’s a Big Beautiful Ban. The best one in history probably. You know it’s sensible as Ben couldn’t even really find a way to knock it, other than using unnecessary quotations around facts to undermine them.
These travel bans and rescinding of temporary protected status is affecting Cubans and Venezuelans in Miami whose families vocally supported Trump because he thought he was just going to deport only "those black people from Little Haiti". Many of them are friends and family. There is a Miami woman on the news this week who supported Trump and now her illegal husband was deported to Cuba, while she was left here with a 3 year-old...
These travel bans and rescinding of temporary protected status is affecting Cubans and Venezuelans in Miami whose families vocally supported Trump because he thought he was just going to deport only "those black people from Little Haiti". Many of them are friends and family. There is a Miami woman on the news this week who supported Trump and now her illegal husband was deported to Cuba, while she was left here with a 3 year-old daughter and a physically disabled older child, and says she feels betrayed by these policies. This will make it even harder for her husband to come back legally. As a liberal who does not support President Trump's policies, I say this is fucking glorious. "I knew Trump said he was going to fuck with some groups of people, like those black people from Haiti or those gays from San Francisco. I know that's bad, but I'm ok with it as long as I can get cheap eggs. I just didn't think he was going to fuck with ME".
To which I say, "Sucks to be you". FAFO.
Yet this just proves that Trump is not racist. Simple, if you're here illegally you're subject to deportation. It's not based upon race.
You liberals screamed that Trump would deport all the "brown and black people" and when he didn't base it upon race you scream he's deporting the "white people." Your TDS runs deep.
BTW I live in Miami. Trump remains very, very popular here.
Sure, George, Trump's documented and legal history of racial discrimination - not to mention his administration's strident attempts to erase the history and contributions of people like the Tuskegee Airmen and Medgar Evers, and any celebration of diversity in America - is all a liberal conspiracy to paint him unfairly and unjustly. I guess that's why while wars and conflicts rage on in Africa and Asia and the Middle East - and millions upon millions...

I guess that's why while wars and conflicts rage on in Africa and Asia and the Middle East - and millions upon millions of innocent Black- and Brown-skinned folks are ensnared into humanitarian crises - he's closed America's refugee settlement program down...except for those poor, poor white Afrikaaners who are the victims of a fake, genocidal conspiracy theory. GTFOH.
But Trump IS deporting black and brown people and importing white South Africans. "Why don't we bring in more people from Norway and less from shithole countries?" My comment wasn't a post about race. It was about someone who supported his policies, for whatever reason, was warned this would happen, and now she's the victim of the very thing people warned her she would be a victim of and she HAPPENS to be Cuban. I'm...

I'm not one to bring racism into everything. That being said, if you think President Larry the Cable Guy is not a racist I have a pair of gold sneakers to sell you.
@Michael
Please, Larry the Cable Guy is far more principled than the turdsack in the Oval Office
“You liberals” and “TDS”. Is that all you got? Seems like you are incapable of anything other than a knee jerk reaction when anyone criticizes your Dear Leader.
I wonder if he's going to put a travel ban on the Heard and McDonald Islands, much like when he tried to put tariffs on the penguins there?
There have been travel bans from presidents of both parties.
It has hardly something Trump has universally done.
For somebody so dedicated to nuance when it comes to anything Delta related, you sure do lack it on any other subject.
it's either fact or it's not.
Did or did not travel bans exist for any nationalities under administrations of both parties before this administration?
It is a simple yes or no answer.
Tim, nobody was arguing whether somebody else had done it before. What's being contested is the merit of the policy this time around. Spoiler alert, there's no merit here. Like his "trafficking" tariffs, this policy won't actually solve the issue he's purporting to address. It's just another inane decision from a senile crank.
yes, the fact that such policies have existed before IS part of why this isn't near as big of a deal as some make it out to be.
it won't matter much in terms of volume because most of these countries - Cuba and Venezuela excepted - do not generate significant amounts of traffic.
The question is what happens to the relatively small amount of flights between the US and Cuba.
In a way, yes. Biden's Covid-era travel ban for unvaccinated people invoked the exact same law. (section 212(f))
The orange oaf only knows how to ban and block. He has no other policy settings, and only understands politics through the lens of T3h b0rd3r.
This is nonsense and we're all dumber for having read it.
Hm, which religious ideology do they have in common? Hint: It’s the same de@th cult you leftists are mass-importing into western countries.
Care to enlighten us about the religious ideologies of Burma, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo-Brazzaville?
Congo-Brazzaville used to be a Marxist-Leninist state. They thought that red, the color of Communism should be good. Green, the color of capitalism, or they thought it was, should be bad. Therefore, traffic lights should reflect that. Red or Communism would mean go! Green or capitalism should be bad and stop.
Guess what? Confusion and traffic accidents!
If you're still referencing Congo-Brazzaville in 2025 then all it shows is how many decades out-of-date you are. Oops! Sometimes insults have a way of hitting the sender instead of the target..
@John , I'm not sure whether I agree with your assessment that the description is horribly out of date as my friends from there often call the country 'Brazza'.
However, your assumption around my preferred way of referring to the country is incorrect. Admittedly, I don't often use the formal name- I usually call it 'little Congo', which, again, is a name popular with people from there.
The wording of my comment had been chosen...

Yeah, Endre, the millions of Theravada Buddhists from Laos are definitely planning to invade America and, I dunno, meditate everyone to death?
"So I find it curious that Egypt isn’t impacted by these new restrictions in any form…"
They probably bought millions of dollars worth of the dotard's meme coin. Enrich the dotard personally, and get away with murder (or anything, really) literally.
u can tell the people who are going to have a horrible next 4 years by the tone of their replies.
cheer up Willy, its only 4 years you have to deal with it.
4. more. years
The fact that you think this administration's policies are only going to negatively impact liberals is adorable.
guess ill think about it in 4 years.
have a fun 4 years Mikey.
Nah he'll definitely croak before then thankfully.
I think Egypt was not impacted because of the special relationship Egypt has with Ben and the current administration wants to be sensitive to this relationship.
Trump's new executive order restricts residents of 19 countries from visiting sh*thole country
Supreme Court have backed Trump too. Seems an easy-win for them, saying "Yes" to this bill to keep him sweet; then hopefully pushing back on his next more hair-brained idea in the future.
The portion of this post that's about the White House justification omits the fact that Trump's verbal remarks introducing the policy specifically referenced the recent Boulder attack as a precipitating incident. That attack was perpetrated by a visa holder from Egypt, which of course is not on the list of affected countries. So at best, our addled president doesn't fully understand who this ban impacts and/or why his administration is implementing it.
@ Ben L. -- Good point, just added that. Thanks.
"So at best, our addled president doesn't fully understand who this ban impacts and/or why his administration is implementing it."
He has stage 3-4 dementia. Even if he understood who the ban impacts or why, he'd forget it in 120 seconds. He's extremely unwell, and surrounded by self-aggrandizing people whose only guiding principles are "me me me me me more money for me me me me me" and "harm everyone who's not white or rich."

Wait! Here come the Biden trolls! Reminder: Biden is no longer president, and when he was, he was surrounded with serious people who understood that a working government is actually a good thing. TDS = Those who blindly follow the orange racist-in-chief. THAT is what is truly deranged.
Trust, I don’t like him or his administration … but I don’t see a problem with this new travel ban policy. It seems considered … more than the tariff policies (!!!!)
How so? I can understand requiring visas in advance and more thorough vetting at ports of entry for people from countries like Iran, Libya, or Afghanistan, but a blanket ban doesn't make sense. How so? I can understand requiring visas in advance and more thorough vetting at ports of entry for people from countries like Iran, Libya, or Afghanistan, but a blanket ban doesn't make sense. Many people from those countries come to the US for an education or employment, and those are bright people. The actual superpower of the US is ability to get people from around the world to come here to start businesses and get educations, something the current admin and most of the right simply does not "get". By blanket banning them, you remove any ability for them to contribute to our economy or research. As an example, the guy that figured out the jump from 4G to 5G wireless signals was an MIT grad, but his visa expired and no company would sponsor him to stay in the country and continue working on it. So he went home to Turkey and sold his research to China instead, to the US's detriment.
And beyond that, just looking at that list. Cuba? Iraq? Equatorial Guinea? Turkmenistan? Venezuela? Haiti? You're joking right? There's a bigger threat from the weirdo rightwing US "militias" than there is from any individual from those countries. Heck, Iraq is about as stable and normal as a new middle eastern democracy can be right now. Dementia Donny doesn't have a clue what he's doing here.
Good! People from these ****hole countries have no business traveling to the US.
Pretty sure this poster Ben is the same racist Jackson Waterston who got banned from FT and other travel sites. Only comes here to race bait.
Who cares. Next article please.
Everyone should care Jack, “Next (comment) please”.
Excellent news and completely justified.
